On March 11, 2011 a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan. The resulting tsunami flooded 65% of the city area of Higashi-matsushima, killing more than 1,000 people.
Four months have now passed since the disaster and the people of Higashi-matsushima want to thank all the people who have supported them and tell them that they are doing well.
It has been decided that a "Revival Festival for Higashi-matsushima - Thank You!" will be held on August 20, 2011.
SocialTOUR is supporting the festival as a reconstruction assistance project, and as part of that will donate fireworks for the event. This will be especially welcome as most firework events have been canceled this year.

What do fireworks mean to the Japanese?
What does it mean to display fireworks in Japan? You may wonder if you ever came to Japan.
A long time ago, our ancestors displayed fireworks to help those who had died of disease and hunger rest in peace.
Nowadays, we display fireworks at summer festivals that attract so many people with their beautiful and colorful designs. Audiences can share their time and feelings with friends, family and lovers, which might help them more closely connect their friendships, family ties and relationships. We also enjoy sparklers with our family and friends which makes wonderful childhood memories.
At this time, we are supporting "Higashi Matsushima Genki Festa" to transfer the gratitude of local people to everyone who supported them with supplies and by voulunteering.
We wish the victims of Higashi Nihon great earthquake on 11th of March can rest in peace through our fireworks and sparklers.
It doesn't matter where you are. Let's share the moment with local people.
「日本人にとっての花火」
日本人にとって、花火を打ち上げるということはどのようなことを意味するのでしょうか…
もし一度でも日本へ訪れたことがあれば、ふと疑問に感じたことがあるかもしれません。
昔、日本人の祖先は疫病や飢餓で亡くなられた方への慰霊のために花火を打ち上げていました。
今日はというと、日本人にとって打ち上げ花火とは夏祭りには欠かせないものであり、その色彩豊かで美しさを秘めた花火は見ている人々の心さえも明るくする力があります。また打ち上げ花火だけでなく、自分たちで線香花火を手にして家族や友達と楽しむこともまた花火のもうひとつの楽しみであり、幼少期の思い出として日本人の心に刻まれます。
今日の日本人にとっての花火は、自分たちの感情や時間を友達、家族、恋人たちと共有することで、より一層お互いの絆や友情を深めていく手段でもあるのかもしれません。
今回のフェスティバルでは花火を通して、東松島の方々からボランティア・支援物資で支えて下さった皆様への感謝の意を伝えたいという目的があります。私たちSocialTOURは、3月11日の東日本大震災で犠牲になられた方々へのご冥福をお祈りする為、また東松島の復興を祈願して、"ありがとう"東松島元気フェスタを支援しています。
どこの場所からでも国からでも構いません。ぜひ8/20現地の人々とその瞬間を共有しましょう。
